The Faves Playlist - Week of 12/6

Listen to music from Meagre Martin, Computer Kill, Slightest Clue, and more.

Bambara - Pray To Me

Post-punk band Bambara has signed to Bella Union. On their debut single for the label, a co-release with Wharf Cat Records, the band gets into the psyche of an obsessed man. “A one-eyed man arrives at a country karaoke night with a knife in his pocket and a plan to win over Elena, the object of his obsession,” the band says. “His fantasy unravels when he sees her kissing a stranger at the bar. The music barrels along with a raucous mania mirroring the one-eyed man’s spiraling psyche as it begins to whirl toward a murderous climax.” The Brooklyn band will be touring across the UK/EU in the spring and will be announcing North American tour dates soon.

Of the Veil - Sisyphus

Montreal’s Of the Veil explores “isolation, hyperreality, and discomfort in the digital age” on their new EP Extrasensory. The duo, Kai Grey and Lailah Reynolds, is influenced by Crystal Castles Grimes, and Joy Division. Their song “Sisyphus,” was inspired by Greek mythology and explores the punishment of a repetitive cycle. Extrasensory can be purchased on cassette directly from the band.

Dressed Like Boys - Jaouad

Dressed like Boys, the solo project of DIRK frontman, pays homage to the performance artist Jaouad Alloul. “This song is about Jaouad Alloul.” Jelle explains. “He lives in Belgium, just like me, although his roots lie in Morocco. Jaouad contains multitudes. He is an actor, a writer, a singer. A gay man, a muslim, a drag queen. A freedom fighter. A gentle, wounded spirit. Above all, he is unafraid. Unafraid to be himself in a world where everyone seems to be a judge. I wanted to pay tribute to his beautiful, wonderful humanity by writing this song.” Dressed Like Boys’ debut album will be out next year.

The Men - Pony

New York’s The Men have announced their new album Buyer Beware. On their new single “Pony” “This one picked up the name Pony cuz it felt a little sugary and sweet,” the band explains. “It was one of those things that just came out when we talked about the song and it stuck. I'm really happy with the fuzz tones we got on here, and the harmony vocals from Nick [Chiericozzi] and Jess [Poplawski] take this to another level. Lyrically, it's about that transitional moment - when the jig is up.” Buyer Beware is out 2/28 via Fuzz Club. Record release show is 3/1 at TV Eye.

Dirty Liars - Nightmare

Australian garage rock trio Dirty Liars, who are Ian McDirt (guitar), Mandy Moo (vocals/bass), Ben Woods (Drums), has unleashed their new single “Nightmare,” built around the idea of parallel worlds. As the band explains, “Around the time we formed the three piece, the concept of an alternative reality was a never ending topic of discussion between Ian and Mandy, who both had very separate and dissatisfying personal lives.” Both band members were going through separations at the same time, which they call a “disturbing repeating nightmare that had to be endured knowing that one morning, both could wake up to a new dawn.” Dirty Liars is expected to release more singles throughout 2025.
