The Faves Playlist - Week of 11/20

Listen to music from Kills Birds, Superheaven, Liteweight Champion, some fear & moss boy.

Pales - Piece of Meat

Post-punk band Pales riot against male predators on their new single “Piece of Meat.” The French band is influenced by bands like Fugazi, Sonic Youth and the Breeders, while positioning themselves next to their post-punk contemporaries. Their live session, which you can watch above, was shot in Strasbourg, France back in June and features the songs “"Piece of Meat" and "1518." Both tracks are off the band’s upcoming EP, out early next year.

VIAL - DIY or DIe

Minneapolis punk trio VIAL are releasing their re-recorded/re-worked album Grow Up as Grow The Fuck Up. The band explains, “We rerecorded our debut EP Grow Up to look back on our progress as musicians and revisit some very nostalgic songs after 5 years of VIAL. It’s like a little love letter to our younger selves. When we first recorded Grow Up, we had very limited resources during the recording process and didn’t even use our own cables. We feel very lucky we’re able to revisit this EP now that we have access to the funds, skills, and equipment we’d always wanted to allocate towards these eight songs.” Watch the video for the single “DIY or Die” and catch the band on tour later this month.

The Laughing Chimes - High Beams

Ohio jangle pop four-piece The Laughing Chimes has announced their second album Whispers In The Speech Machine. “This album represents our recent shift to incorporating more of an American gothic look and sound into our music,” the band explains on IG. “Don’t worry we’re still clinging fast to that jangly 80s sound.” Whispers In The Speech Machine is out 1/31 via Slumberland and is available for pre-order now on limited edition splatter vinyl and cassette.

The Assist - Disconnections

UK indie rockers The Assist have dropped the title track off their upcoming album Disconnections. According to the band’s vocalist Mikey, the song is a reflection of modern society. “A never-ending demand for ‘bigger and better’ in all walks of life has ultimately led to the most rewarding of experiences being disregarded and undervalued,” he says. “Our gauge as to what is and what is not important anymore seems out and there is a real lack of gratitude that is being shown towards life and what that naturally encompasses. That artificial dopamine hit that is so accessible at the end of our fingertips is proving to be the biggest threat to our understanding of worth as we become desensitized to daily highs that we now call mundane.” Disconnections is out in 2025 and is now available for pre-order.

Huxlii - So This Is It

Art pop project Huxlii has shared her debut single “So This Is it.” The VHS inspired music video features angels, nosebleeds and chainmail. The song is off the upcoming EP Odds and Ends, But Mostly Ends which sees Huxlii moving from DIY bedroom recordings to a studio. Huxlii is the solo project of Toronto based indie artist Sabrina Carrizo Sztainbok (Luna Li), who describes her music as “art pop with a punk heart." Odds and Ends, But Mostly Ends is out 1/17 via Majesticsilk Records.

Autocamper - Summertime

We like cassingles and Autocamper is giving us what we need! The Manchester-based indie pop project is teaming up with Oakland’s Slumberland Records and York’s Safe Suburban Home Records to release the single containing "Summertime" and "Ken Hom." If that wasn’t enough to get you to listen, the band “sipped some kind of berry tea during the tracking and later moved to honey flavored lager.” Tapes are now shipping, so pick one up.
