Genre is death @ The New Colossus Festival 2025

New York’s Genre is death is equal parts noise, no wave and post-punk. Their debut album Talk sees the duo, Ty Varesi and Tayler Lee, experimenting with noise (“Beyond Good People”) and questioning our mirrored identity (“Images”). There’s an immediacy to the music—the band pushing the boundaries of creation both off and onstage. Their 30-minute set at Bowery Electric for the The New Colossus Goth Post-Punk party, alongside Silent Mass, Bestial Mouths, Flawless Issues and Coatie Pop, was as electric as 10-track their debut.

We caught up with the band after their performance. Read our exchange below.

Homebase: Queens, NY
How would you describe your sound? Abrasive, moody & dissonant
Highlight of The New Colossus Festival? Seeing Gewalt (DE) play for the first time at Pianos New Colossus Day 1 --- And hanging with Peer Pleasure (IRE) !
Fav piece of gear? Sabbathi Pedal-- it's just an awesome, obliterating wall of noise
Do you have any pre-show rituals? A couple of High Lifes before we take the stage seems to do the trick
What’s your favorite song to perform live? Repulse (unreleased)

The debut album Talk by Genre is death is out now and can be purchased through Bandcamp, including on a limited edition cassette via Insecurity Hits. You can also listen wherever you stream music. Follow Genre is death on Instagram.
