The Faves Playlist - April 2023

This month we’ve got new music from honeysick, Aestrid, say hi biscus, Matty, Boyd and more. Here are some of our favorites:

Night Tapes - Inigo

London electronic/dream pop band Night Tapes has released their new single “Inigo.” As the band explains, the song “is about those moments in life when you understand that it is time to move from a comfortable setting and develop a spine through uncomfortable situations.” This is a follow-up to their last single, which we also featured, “Selene.”

The Empty Threats - Evil Eye

Adelaide band The Empty Threats are getting ready to release their debut album Monster Truck Mondays. On the last single before the release, the band gets introspective. “‘Evil Eye’ is about the first realization of the thought of your own mortality, and to truly commit to being present in moments as there is no practice run, this is it,” the band writes on their Instagram. Catch the post-punk band on tour as they play across Australia this month.

Mari Dangerfield - Eco-Anxiety

London bedroom pop producer Mari Dangerfield takes on the fears perpetuated by climate change in her new single “Eco-Anxiety.” On the song, the alt-pop singer-songwriter feels the pressure, while bringing attention to our responsibility as a collective to save the world. The track is off of her upcoming EP Eco-Fever, set to be released in June.

Mooncult - Ghost Song

On their first release since their 2020 album Swallow Me Whole, Brooklyn-based Mooncult get spooky. Their new psychedelic rock-influenced song “Ghost Song” starts off with a ripping bass line and culminates in a choir of off-center voices speaking over each other. This is the first of six singles to be released in 2023 by the post-punk band.

Wolfschmidt - Suffocated

The new single by Swedish shoegaze/indie rock trio Wolfschmidt is a take on the internal conflict of helping someone in need. As the band explains, “This song is an attempt to capture the feeling of failing to save a dying friend. In one sense there’s a tremendous amount of pain, but still, there’s that thin straw of hope which you would run for miles to grasp.”

Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer

After having a full-length album stolen from her studio in early 2020 and returning to Pakistan to be close to family, London-born artist Nabihah Iqbal rediscovered her connection to music. On the lead track off of her upcoming album Dreamer, set to be released later this month, Iqbal captures the allure of being wrapped up in a daydream.

Into the Light - Manuscript

Rochester, New York band Into the Light has released their debut song “Manuscript.” Influenced by Failure, Quicksand, and DIIV, the band masterfully blends post-rock, shoegaze & art-rock to create something unique. The band is working on its first album, which is set to arrive by the end of the year.

Teenage Wrist - Sunshine

Los Angeles shoegaze/grunge duo Teenage Wrist has released their new song “Sunshine.” This is the band’s first release since their 2021 album Earth Is A Black Hole. Vocalist Marshall Galagher comments that the song is about “letting go of past trauma, being present and finding love inside yourself.”

Deeper - Sub

For their first single “Sub” on Sub Pop, Chicago indie rock/post-punk band Deeper reworked one of their songs written in 2021. “The nice thing about iterating on songs over the pandemic was having time to revisit old ideas – the song even features a guitar part from the first recorded Deeper song that we ended up discarding” the band explains.

Margaritas Podridas - Filosa

Mexican band Margaritas Podridas has been on our radar for a while. Produced by Seattle’s legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden), their new track “Filosa” is a blunt analysis of the mental struggle we often face coming to terms with reality. The song is heavily influenced by 90s grunge and shows off vocalist Carolina Enríquez’s stunning cathartic growls.

LAWN CHAIR - Punkrock Band

The new EP Eat the Beans and Wear the Jeans! by the art-rock/post-punk band LAWN CHAIR is coming out soon! On their new single “Punkrock Band,” the Cologne-based five-piece explores our attraction to celebrity life. LAWN CHAIR is heading out on its first headlining tour across Germany in May.

Bleached Heat - Nausea

Inspired by the work of Jean-Paul Sartre, Bleached Heat’s “Nausea” is pure synth-pop. With its pulsing synth bass and chorus-heavy guitars, the song tackles the relationship between addiction and mental health. The Vancouver Island artist comments, “The lyrics are essentially me reflecting on moments when I experience that deep dread that feels like a huge lump in your throat and chest.”

Stutterboy - False Dam

On their new single “False Dam,” Brooklyn band Stutterboy pair dissonant guitar tones with dark vocals. The track calls out our inability to deal with social issues head-on, instead putting on a mirage for the sake of appearing optimistic about the world’s future. The post-punk band has a new full-length album coming out next month.

Fatal Jamz - Cult Star

hhharpies - look left

Indie pop band hhharpies have released their new single “look left.” The track features a driving distorted bass line and stellar vocal harmonies.
